Right Whales Are Back!

The right whales, once near extinction, have come back to Cape Cod Bay for their mid-winter break. Every year is different, but this year seems especially good for these sea creatures. Last year we had an (according to scientists) unusual mid-winter birth in the Bay, where scientists feared for the life of the calf due to the cold water temperatures. The calf was spotted well into the warmer weather so their fears were allayed. The estimated total right whale population is about 510. Thoughts are that about half of them frequent Cape Cod Bay. Wow!

Water Quality At Eastham Beaches

The quality of the water that we swim and play in is always a concern. The Barnstable County tests the quality of our ponds and Cape Cod Bay beaches weekly and posts the results graphically on their website. When there is a 'fail' due to bacteria they re-test the very next day, to minimize the beach closure. So far, there has only been two saltwater beach closures and 2 fresh water pond beach closures.

Check out the Barnstable County Department of Health website (& check the water!).

Sharks In Cape Cod Bay - Oh My!

Sharks are a part of summer on Cape Cod. They seem to follow the seals as they move about. This year we've seen seals in the bay. So, we have sharks here also. Check out this video, shown on NECN earlier today, taken by a local fisherman late last week. Oh My!

Picture of the Day: Icy Day at Cape Cod Bay

I took this photo two days ago while researching a home in Brewster. This photo was taken at Linnell Landing in Brewster. There was no snow on the ground but the white band off the beach is all ice. Hmmm.

In a pilot project, new sonar equipment will map the coastal areas of Cape Cod Bay. An article in the Cape Codder described how technical problems have long prevented accurate mapping of the more shallow areas of Cape Cod Bay. But a new sonar technology solves the previous shortcomings. Read the article ..Here.

Right Whales - "Like the Swallows of Capistrano"

Right WhalesIt's spring. Like the swallows of Capistrano, the right whales arrive in Cape Cod Bay to feed on the abundance of zooplankton that the Bay provides. This year, so far, about 70 different whales have been sighted. A good year. It is believed that a record number of calves, 40, were born this winter off the coasts of Florida and Georgia. Read the full article, on Boston.com. The whales can best be seen from the shore between Race Point and Herring Cove beaches. Check out this video from last spring.
